Grey reference case
6 September 2019, 14:20. Grey case received with the regular North Circuit load at Marlowe Civic Rooms. Seal 188 intact. Mass 31.4 kg. Contents: eight-output player, control tablet, loom A, loom B, two mains leads, four short adapters, laminated route card. No asset number on the player. Case marked DIVERSE in white stencil beneath the current label.
14:55. Tablet started under local profile MARLOWE MAIN. Six audio files visible in a folder called REVIEW. Numbers 01 to 06, no titles. I left them in place pending advice. Calibration file supplied by North Circuit ran normally.
7 September, 09:10. Message from depot: use the case, ignore REVIEW, delete nothing. Added yellow tie to the rear handle because both grey cases now have the same lid markings.
During line check, output 7 carried the left rear signal assigned to output 5. Reloaded MARLOWE MAIN. Assignment corrected. REVIEW folder remained open when the tablet restarted.
13 September, 16:05. East Barrow Assembly Hall. Case seal replaced, number 204. Player showed profile ORNELLA R despite the route card specifying EAST BARROW. Selected local profile. Preshow speech clean.
At 18:40, Lewis Barden asked for music during door hold. I used REVIEW 01 at low level. Six sections, concert material, total 47 minutes. Section four had percussion fixed behind the right bank. File stopped after section six without a tail marker.
Lewis said the rear placement would upset the ushers. No public playback made.
14 September. Nothing beyond pack-out. Tablet battery at 62 per cent.
20 September, 15:35. Pember Hall. REVIEW files copied to depot stick R19 after instruction from A. Pike. File dates all 14 March 2018. Creation times increase by roughly ninety minutes, except 05, which precedes 04 by eleven minutes. The numbered folders contain separate project snapshots as well as audio exports. I did not open the projects.
Player returned to ORNELLA R after the copy. Local profile had been selected and saved at 15:12.
18:15. Played section four from REVIEW 01 over rear pair only. Percussion now travelled clockwise. Lewis present. We compared the depot copy through his laptop and heard the fixed placement recorded last week. He wrote “case matrix” on his fault sheet and took the stick.
27 September, 13:50. Colne Market Hall. Replacement tablet supplied. Old tablet retained in side pocket at depot request. New unit found the player automatically and displayed profile VANONI R. There is no Vanoni entry in the North Circuit profile list.
REVIEW 01 fixed behind right bank again. REVIEW 02 moved clockwise. REVIEW 03 moved clockwise and finished approximately a quarter-tone higher than it began. I used the house piano for comparison. Piano last serviced 9 September.
A. Pike requested running times only. Sent: 46:58, 47:02, 46:51, 47:11, 47:11, 47:09.
4 October, 17:25. Lanton Forum. Retort rig delivered in place of the usual speech rack. Its delayed return made announcements impractical, so I patched the house lectern directly and left the unit capped. Grey case passed output check.
Lewis brought back R19. His copy of REVIEW 01 now moved clockwise on his laptop. He had played files 01 through 06 in order at the depot. We copied 01 again from the case and obtained the fixed version. The two copies had different sizes. The date shown for each remained 14 March 2018.
21:40. Packed without resolving. Long wait for dock key.
11 October, 12:30. Marlowe Civic Rooms. Second visit. Seal 233 already cut when unloaded. Driver states he opened the lid at depot to check for loom B. Loom B present.
Ran files in reverse order. REVIEW 06 began with ambience high in the rear channels. By REVIEW 02 the ambience had lowered and the solo passages were forward. REVIEW 01 ended at original pitch. Player profile after completion: ORNELLA R.
Ran 01 again. Percussion moved clockwise.
A printed Diverse Studio hire sheet was under the foam tray. It assigns the case to the Ornella Room for “exchange reviews” from 14 to 19 March 2018. Return signature absent. The lower line gives Vanoni Room as the next user. I sent a scan to A. Pike and replaced the sheet.
18 October, 16:10. Pember Hall. Instruction received to keep REVIEW closed. Case used for North Circuit calibration and interval playback. No fault.
16:55. Player briefly displayed USER 04 before loading PEMBER. The profile list then contained USER 04, ORNELLA R, VANONI R and the seven current tour venues. USER 04 could not be selected after restart.
25 October, 10:45. East Barrow Assembly Hall. Depot engineer attended. Initials J.S. He removed the tablet and read the player history through his own terminal. Twenty-seven loads recorded since 6 September, matching my count if automatic starts are included. History also contains sixty-two loads dated March 2018. User fields alternate O and V until load 41. Loads 42 to 62 all show O.
J.S. said in full: “The profile is saving the next state under the file that has just finished.”
He would not enter that sentence on the North Circuit defect form. Recorded fault as persistent profile recall.
1 November, 15:00. Colne Market Hall. Temporary player installed in grey case. Original player retained by J.S. REVIEW folder absent. Output check satisfactory. Temporary player is asset NC-441 and weighs 1.1 kg less. Added packing block.
Lewis asked whether his depot copy should be deleted. A. Pike replied that the files had been delivered as gifts through private links and were already held in personal collections. No deletion order issued. Lewis moved R19 to the locked pouch.
8 November, 18:30. Lanton Forum. Routine service. Retort rig omitted from load. Temporary player remained on LANTON profile after shutdown and restart.
Received an email from Diverse Studio accounts asking whether North Circuit had “the six approved wishlists.” Forwarded to A. Pike. No attachments.
15 November, 11:20. Marlowe Civic Rooms. J.S. returned the grey case lid and foam tray without the original player. Diverse Studio hire sheet missing. He supplied no receipt for removal. I entered the player as outstanding against case GC-2.
A. Pike has two exports labelled 06. One places the solo forward, running time 47:09. The other places it behind the centre line, running time 47:11. Both carry approval metadata under different operator initials. The initials correspond to the credits sheet circulated for the concert release, though their order is reversed.
The date of the credits sheet is 21 March 2018. Its author field is blank.
22 November. No equipment incidents. GC-2 travelled empty except for NC-441 and standard looms.
29 November, 09:05. Depot. End-of-route return. Case exterior cleaned. NC-441 transferred to shelf 6. Loom A failed continuity inspection and was tagged for repair. Grey shell, foam tray and laminated route card placed in bay D under hold notice 771. Original player remains entered against J.S., removal date 25 October 2019.
