Credit, quintet EZO 14
On 9 June 2011 the printed programme for a garden reception at Buckingham Palace listed, under item four, "String Quintet, Boccherini, arr. by the Musical Director of the Fenhurst Ensemble." The arrangement, a light setting of the second movement for two violins, viola and two cellos, had been made over four months by the ensemble's second violinist, at her own kitchen table, and catalogued by her in a ring-binder as "EZO 14," a label she had taken from the storage box the parts lived in and never explained to anyone.
She wrote to the director once the programme was seen. The reply came from an assistant, and she copies it here rather than summarise it, because summary would be a kindness: "The Musical Director's name goes on all commissioned work, that is ensemble policy, and I don't think anyone reads the small print anyway." She adds nothing to that sentence. She lets it stand as received.
Rehearsals had taken place in a converted garage behind a veterinary surgery on Corly Lane, where the owner kept a litter of puppies in the yard and the previous tenant's graffiti was still visible along the inside wall, never painted over because the landlord considered it load-bearing information about the drainage. A hand-drawn mappa of the two rooms, garage and store, hung by the door with the fuse box marked in red.
Retort rig
The garage's amplifier was a retort rig on long-term hire from Northline Event Hire, known for returning a played-back voice a fraction of a second late. The delay lengthened on damp evenings and shortened on dry ones, closely enough that the players used it, once the real hygrometer failed in March, to decide whether to close the store-room window before starting. No replacement hygrometer was ordered that year.
